Vignette #3: “They had a pig….”

Chris and Sandra were having a celebration. My older brother and his wife knew how to throw a party, and for this one, they were having a good old-fashioned pig roast. They had been roasting this one for hours, and people from all over were coming from it. Her family, from Oklahoma and elsewhere, were numerous, with in-laws and nieces and nephews of all ages. George & I came from Upstate New York. His sons and her sons came from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

When the pig was done roasting over the spit (in full view of all for conversation starters), all the other foodstuffs came out. The food was plentiful and delectable. It was a feast complete with good conversation and laughter.

Their home, out in the suburbs, was set in a rural area–a great backdrop for the celebration. Chris & Sandra had two dogs and a cat. There was a little lake (fishing was great!) which also had turtles and Great White Herons. Their neighbors on one side had horses. Wild rabbits bounced all over. A deer (Delilah) that Chris used to feed came for a brief visit. All the creatures were fun for all the kids, especially one little three year old. Sandra engaged the little girl in a conversation about her day.

“So you’re having a good time? What are you enjoying most?”

“Well…. There’s a LOT of animals,” she said very seriously.

Sandra prodded, “Which animals have you seen today?”

She thought hard….

“You have dogs. And cats. And horses, and rabbits, and I saw a deer, too.”

Her eyes narrowed. “You had a pig…” she said nonchalantly, “But we ate it.”
