Vignette #5: Are you comfortable?

I had knee surgery scheduled, and George was lurking in the waiting room, pacing, expecting to talk to the doctor.  After months of uncomfortable pain, only time and rehabilitation stood in the way of a new working knee. When the doctor finally made his way to George, he had a smile on his face. He said all the necessary things–what to expect, how we had to handle these next 48 hours, and the rehab I needed to do in the coming weeks. Then he paused. He looked up at George and shook his head with a grin. ”Your wife is something…..”

Alarmed, George waited for the shoe to drop.

“We’re wheeling her in to the surgical suite, so she’s half in and out of anesthesia. The anesthetist asks her “Are you comfortable?’ and she says–groggily–“I make a living….’”
